Making a Difference with TOMS Shoes

One of my favorite things about being a part of PGi is the chance to work with so many talented people who have life-long passions outside the office. For me, that passion is painting. So when TOMS shoes asked me to participate as a guest artist for their Style Your Sole event this month in Austin, I jumped at the chance! Having been an avid TOMS fan and wearer of their adorable canvas shoes for many years, I’ve been inspired and moved by their One for One™ campaign to give a pair of new shoes to a child in need for every pair sold. I wasn’t familiar with Style Your Sole … yet…. but soon discovered first hand just how wildly popular TOMS are and how far people are willing to go to have them customized for free by local artists!

I was the first artist to arrive at our local Nordstrom where the event was held on Saturday, August 20th, and was quickly encircled by an excited crowd of grown-ups and kids that had been waiting in line outside the store since 9 AM. Three hours later, they were chomping at the bit to get their new TOMS painted and already 30 people were signed up before the event had even officially begun.

With five artists on the panel in total, we laid out our materials and quickly got to work as the TOMS reps coordinated who would be working with which customers. Considering the shocking popularity of the event AND that it also happened to be Tax Free Weekend (swoon), let’s just say it was an exercise in ordered chaos, championed by a sea of kind-hearted, smiling people with angelic patience and appreciation for art made on the fly.

I was really charmed by the community experience I had that day, and amazed by the good people of Austin, and beyond, when I learned how one aunt – always searching for something fun to do with her favorite niece – drove all the way from Waco to have their TOMS painted together (I’m honored to say, by me). Before the event, I had worried that I might not be able to pull it off … how was I supposed to come up with enough ideas if I was expected to paint 3-4 pairs an hour for four hours? Impossible!

Back to School with TOMS Shoes

Ready for back to school.

My fears were quickly put to rest when my first customer, a little girl named Amanda B. made a special request in her pint-sized voice “I’d like blue zebra print please!” followed by an adorable, half-toothless grin. Cue heart melt.

And that was essentially what the entire day was like for me – a gloriously bumpy madhouse of sweet people and precious kids, many of whom had been fantasizing about what they’d like on their TOMS for weeks. I painted everything from autumn leaves and surf waves to paw prints and starbursts. Needless to say, the pressure was definitely ON not to make a mistake or misinterpret their wishes!

Not to mention I was painting against the clock and under the watchful eyes of the owners and countless bystanders goggling curiously at this crazy experiment in social good-meets-art-meets-retail experience.

In the end, we painted approximately 80 pairs of TOMS for the public that day, and I was moved by how many kids told me that they loved the shoes I decorated for them so much that they were going to wear them on their first day of school.

I posed for many a happy customer for photos of the completed pieces and received some kudos from the TOMS rep, Kerry Barnes, for being the first artist she’d seen at one of these events to bring a series of cool patches and buttons which I sewed on to many pairs in addition to painting them. All in all it was a blast and an incredible experience that I hope to have the chance to participate in again!

Can They See You Now? Video Conferencing Goes Mobile

How video conferencing technology leads rapidly-increasing workforce demand for mobility.

There are many things that can be said about Google’s recent acquisition of Motorola, but one of them is that it underscores the increasing importance of mobile for tomorrow’s business leaders. (It’s no coincidence, either, that this is a key theme of Dreamforce 2011—which I’m in CA this week to attend.)

In just a few years, mobile video conferencing has evolved from the realm of science fiction to leading edge technology to an affordable service that anybody with a smart phone can use. Sales of smart phones are expected to hit 420 million this year, accounting for 28 percent of the total phone market. We know that mobile marketing is a must—and it’s not surprising that mobile meetings are the next mobile phenomenon.

Digital Nomad Tip #8 – Three Ways to Take Location Out of the Conversation

After a month in Clonakilty, Ireland, PGi’s EMEA headquarters, we’ve arrived in the UK where I will spend two weeks in our London offices. We left Ireland Thursday evening via ferry, worked remote on Friday and enjoyed taking our time getting to the city center where I will set up shop on Tuesday.

Will and I on the Ring of Kerry in Ireland

As we celebrated our arrival in Cardiff Friday evening, I felt an overwhelming sense of great fortune to be able to travel while working. Although I’m sure PGi enjoys a reward of their own, most employers are not as forward-thinking and because of this Digital Nomads and Teleworkers alike must recognize the privilege and strive to keep their stakeholders happy at all costs.

Long-distance calls, internet fees, late nights, early mornings – these are all basic operating costs for the global teleworker and should be considered a small price to pay for the great adventure.

Easiest way to keep you stakeholders happy? Take location out of the conversation. Your location, whether at home or across the world, can be a distraction and even worse, a point of frustration when it comes to reaching you on the phone or coordinating schedules. So “wow” your team with your new destination, then work to make them forget it with 3 ways to take location out of the conversation:

Your Virtual Passport: Meet Face-to-Face Across the World

I traveled the world this week and never even left my desk. I met face-to-face with colleagues in Australia and Ireland right from my desktop here in the United States. We chatted about the weather, brainstormed upcoming events and strategic corporate initiatives. And it was (dare I say it?) fun. Global communications will never be the same — and that’s a very good thing — thanks to GlobalMeet and iMeet.

PGi Associates across the world intermingle weekly (if not daily) to manage global customers, customer care, campaign planning and corporate giving. And with the incredible help of our newest innovations, web conferencing tool GlobalMeet and iMeet virtual meeting rooms, these interactions aren’t the same old boring, often confusing, conference calls.

5 Ways HR Professionals Can Better Keep the Human in Human Resources

How HR professionals are leveraging video conferencing tools to promote teamwork, enhance company-wide performance, and reduce costs.

How many times have you heard the message from a company that “our people are our most valuable resource”? (Google that phrase and you’ll get almost 1.5 million results!) Cliché as it is, best-in-class companies don’t just care about maximizing productivity, but enriching their team’s experience with technologies that help catalyze workforce engagement.

The reality of today’s increasingly virtual workforce creates new opportunities for HR professionals—and many are choosing to come together in real-time meetings where they not only hear and see one another, but collaborate through social media with video conferencing tools. This personal interaction strengthens their bond and enhances the synergy of the group – all without ever leaving their offices.

Digital Nomad Tip #7: Man Cannot Live on Free WiFi Alone

During the past three weeks on the road as a Digital Nomad, I have experienced some of Ireland’s best – I’ve admired the coast of Clonakilty, raised my glass in Cork’s quaintest pubs, walked on the cobblestones of Dublin, cruised the Ring of Kerry, cheered for Tipperary in their championship hurling match, bid in the famous Merlin Car Auction, peered over the Cliffs of Moher and chased the pigs in Timoleague.

Accessing a Hot Spot in Killarney, Ireland

Life as a Digital Nomad suits me well as I enjoy a focused life of work, sleep and fun. Many of life’s distractions such as tending to a home, visiting with friends and family and volunteering are gone and I’m able to use this extra time to keep up with projects at work, plus take on a few new ones and still take in the culture in the evening.

Life isn’t all easy. I miss those distractions and often wish I could teleport back to my house for an evening so I could cook dinner in my kitchen for my friends and family…while volunteering.

I also struggle to stay connected when I’m not in the office. I posted earlier this month on 3 Mistakes Any Traveling Worker Can Make, which touched on the importance of research when looking for a remote, “temporary” office. I’ve had many failed attempts to find free or affordable WiFi and am amazed at how mood altering “WiFi-Disappointment” can be. Which leads me to say, man cannot live on free WiFi alone!

Many teleworkers might claim to have achieved it but it’s just not wise to spend half a morning looking for a signal. Most commuters’ hourly rate would quickly make scouring for a signal financially enviable.

Web Therapy: It’s for Real… on Showtime

More proof that video conferencing is everywhere: Web Therapy on Showtime.

Lisa Kudrow, of Friends’ fame, stars as a passive aggressive therapist who can’t bear to meet with her clients in person. Instead she performs her shrink duties via video chat.

The show is hilarious. The characters are slightly bent. And the use of video for therapy isn’t that far out anymore. In fact telemedicine is a topic, we’ve written about and think is a trend to watch – particularly as video tools evolve.
