Day 5 Georgia Telework Week: Closing the Loop Between Home and the Office

It’s the fifth and final day of my Georgia Telework Week experiment – what a fantastic day! Thank you to the Clean Air Campaign, Governor Deal, PGi and the hundreds of companies that sponsored this week. Telework and video conferencing are top priorities for businesses this year and telecommuting showed me the importance of both as we look toward the future of work: environmental sustainability, enhanced work-life balance and maximized productivity.

Need help creating a telework policy for your company? Or want to start an experiment of your own? I’m here to help!

#FFF: May the Force Be With You! Even Star Wars Joins the #Shift

Nerds and tech junkies everywhere rejoice on this Free Form Friday at PGi: Star Wars Blu-Ray has arrived! My favorite sci-fi flicks, Star Wars, have joined the #Shift into the modern era of technology and social good. Even Yoda, on the Star Wars homepage, is rallying the troops to battle cancer. Which has the PGi team thinking: how else has our world changed since Luke Skywalker hit the big screen in 1977?

1. #Shift: Social Heroes on the Rise. Our favorite comic book heroes come to life in companies all over the world, from TOMS Shoes to Warby Parker — a major shift from bottom lines to social consciousness.

2. #Shift: Social and IR— the New Odd Couple. Howard Lindzon and Joshua Brown lead the rally to loosen starched white collars and open the world of Investor Relations to the social media machine.

3. #Shift: Teleworking Transforms Today’s Business Culture. It’s mobile, flexible and good for the soul. Telework is the new three-piece suit, and our Georgia Telework Week experiment yields amazing results.

Day 4 of Georgia Telework Week: What Are You Wearing?

Teleworkers everywhere were called out, thanks to a recent survey by Career Builder, and I must admit the truth on day four of my Georgia Telework Week experiment. I am guilty of wearing a business mullet: business on top, pajamas on the bottom. Three-out-of-10 telecommuters admitted to wearing PJs while working from home — and I’m guilty as charged. But while my sweats are nice and cozy, the only way I stayed sane this week is my iMeet video conference room.

The home office blues started sinking in this morning in my fourth day outside the office. But instead of opting for faceless conference calls, I simply jumped into iMeet, saw my colleagues live on video and connected via social media — and all was right in my teleworking world.  So, I’ve happily settled for the business mullet that kept me professional on webcam and comfortable in my office chair.

So, in my pink-striped jammies with a cup of joe, I’m heading into my next face-to-face iMeet video meeting. What they don’t know won’t hurt them! See you tomorrow for a wrap up of my week working at home — and I’d love to hear what your staple telework outfit is!

Day 3 Georgia Telework Week: Save the Planet One Commute at a Time

Atlanta and the surrounding communities are at heightened smog alerts this week: are you contributing to the problem? On day three of my Georgia Telework Week experiment, I learned that I put 30 lbs. of carbon emissions into the air every day I commute from my home in Cumming to Buckhead. How much are you putting into our environment?

Teleworking is an incredible way to save our planet — and the benefits extend to enhancing our work-life balances, saving on gas and dry cleaning ($60 saved already!), increasing productivity and enjoying the power of our incredible mobile technology.

And while full-time telecommuting might be out of the cards for most of us, more and more employers are adding flexible work policies into their employee benefits programs. Use our carbon calculator as a way to convince your boss, HR department and board that teleworking is a vital need to take your company into the Future of Work.

Intelisys Focuses on the “People Side of Business” With PGi’s GlobalMeet and iMeet Partnership

Dana Topping is co-owner of telecommunications giant Intelisys. Intelisys is the world’s leading Master Agency, assisting top-earning telecom agents run their businesses smoother with voice and data, cloud, cable, collaboration services, wired and wireless access, and virtual conferencing technology companies.

I know it’s been said before, but people really do buy from people. As the world shrinks and businesses go global, more and more often we’re missing the “people” side of business. My company, Intelisys, is in the relationship business, forging partnerships within the telecommunications industry to enable our independent agents to succeed in the marketplace. Without relationships, we would never make it in this competitive environment. That’s why we’ve partnered with PGi — and why 100 Intelisys agents and 45 employees will have their own personal iMeet video meeting rooms online.

Our relationship with PGi began years ago, when the telecommunications landscape was very different than it is today. Together, we have nurtured innovation in the industry with exciting technological progressions, from operator-attended to automated audio conferencing and from TDM to VoIP. We’ve seen the game-changing transition from audio conferencing to richer, more robust online meetings. Together, we’ve made communications more personal, accessible and affordable for every business. And now, PGi and Intelisys are partnering toward a new era, with video meetings center stage.

Day Two of Georgia Telework Week: Claiming Better Work-Life Balance

It’s the second day of my Georgia Telework Week challenge. Today, I did something I haven’t done in 10 years — I stole 45 glorious minutes for myself before kicking off my workday. Instead of heading into Atlanta’s bumper-to-bumper traffic, I got my kids on the school bus, took my dog for a walk and still connected to work 45 minutes earlier than normal. What a great start to a productive day!

It’s only day two of my telecommuting experience, and I feel revived — rejuvenated. Maintaining work-life balance is difficult for all of us with mobile technology keeping us connected anytime, anywhere. Today, however, teleworking gave me 45 minutes to myself — something I haven’t had since I had my first child. I’ve also taken three virtual GlobalMeet and iMeet meetings, completed two projects and started three more. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Are you a teleworker? How’s your work-life balance? Questions on how your company can create a flex or teleworker strategy? I’ll be connected all day.

How to improve your sales ROI with Sales 2.0 tools

Location may be the most important thing in real estate, but not any longer for salespeople. With the right tools, inside sales teams are proving their value and justifying the investment companies are making in training, development, and resources.

According to the 2011 Inside Sales Metrics Survey from Phoneworks (commentary mine):

  • Nearly 40% of inside sales teams are not in a central location.

The Future of Work Experiment Begins: Day 1 Georgia Telework Week

Welcome to Day 1 of Georgia Telework Week and the PGi telecommuting experiment as I embark on a journey without cars, trains, airplanes, busses and bikes. All this week, it’s just me, my iPhone, laptop, GlobalMeet web conferencing and iMeet videoconferencing.

Join me every day this week to learn how my weeklong telework journey is progressing, what I’ve learned, how I’ve contributed to saving our planet and how I met with colleagues all over the world - right from my home office here in Cumming, GA.

The conversation is wide open. Suggestions? Thoughts? Your opinion on the future of work? Your company’s teleworking philosophy? I’ll be here all day.

Digital Nomad Tip #9: Three Rules for Today’s Global Team

When I started my yearlong journey to visit as many PGi offices as possible, I knew I would come back with a greater understanding of who PGi is on a global level. I also looked forward to finding new and better ways to communicate employee information and how

In Windsor "En Route" to The London Office

best to stay connected to my team back in Atlanta and Austin. I had high hopes of refining my understanding of other cultures, making new friends and conducting highly complex and involved research on…international shopping. What I didn’t expect was to restructure the way I approach working on a global team. No matter how much experience I had working with APAC and EMEA while in the US, it pales in comparison to what I’ve learned working in region.

Relevant to any international team and straight from my six weeks working on the go, three rules for today’s global team:

1. Take Full Advantage of the “Overlap” Time

Depending on where you are and where your team is, you could have as little as 30 minutes “overlap” time throughout the work day. Take full advantage of this fleeting time and make sure emails that have been sitting in your inbox overnight are addressed first. Put the coffee run on hold so that those on the other end don’t have to wait a full day for your response. If further discussion is needed, spare yourself the email and pick up the phone.

2. Respect the “BIG D”

No, not Dallas, or divorce… or almost any other word you’re thinking of that starts with “D.” I’m talking deadlines.
