“Work out a minimum of three days a week. Dad needs to lose his baby weight!”

—       Todd McCormick, PGi Alpharetta, USA

“It’s been an exciting year in 2011 and next year I want to keep the ball rolling and stay healthy. I wish we will all have a prosperous year 2012!”

—       Jaye, PGi Greater China

“My New Year’s resolution is to become an Evernote aficionado.”

—       Mary Ann, PGi Atlanta, USA

“My resolution is always the same: Eat healthy and exercise. Needless to say, I don’t actually do it. The sweet and fatty foods get the best of me. So this year, I’ll try something more realistic: win the lottery.”

—       Hardeep, PGi London, England

My son’s first Christmas: video technology at its best

The McCormick family has a blast every Christmas, but this year was extra special because it was my son, Chase’s first one.

My wife and I wanted to start our family’s own traditions this year to celebrate Chase, so we stayed in Atlanta. Christmas Eve was with my family. Here’s a pic of me with the little guy that night.

Christmas morning, we spent in our own house. As you can see, Chase didn’t have any trouble figuring out what to do with the presents.

My wife’s family lives on the west cost, so we stayed in touch with them via iMeet.  Chase’s grandparents and family could still watch him open their presents, which was special for everyone. Here he is with one of their gifts. Why wouldn’t you want to see this face on iMeet? (It’s like I’ve said before—nothing takes the place of face-to-face.)

Chase is still enjoying all of his toys. He’s is the happiest little guy I know.

Thanks to everyone for a great year, and all the iMeet love, especially for Chase.

Did you use video technology in any special way for the holidays this year?

Digital Nomad Tip #23: A Business Traveler’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays

Over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in some of the world’s most exciting locations – New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, Rome, Milan, even in the heart of the world-famous 6th Street in Austin, TX. If there’s one thing these destinations have in common, it’s their ability to attract photo snapping, lollygagging, party-seeking tourists, especially during the holidays.

From the end of November to mid-January, most cities are a buzz with tourists looking for entertainment, relaxation and above all, a break from the business world. Would love to join every group I see for a two month vacation, but alas, duty calls.

Regardless of where you find yourself during the holiday months, head back to work with the Business Traveler’s Guide to Surviving the Holidays.

  • Your favorite hotel is all booked up. Bummer. Give your rewards membership a break and try out an independent bed & breakfast or look for a hotel outside the city. Some of my favorite hotels can be found just outside the city limits.
  • Cab lines will be extra-long and chock-full of first time hailers so consider hiring a private car or taking mass transit.
  • Make it to the airport early, relax and look forward to an adult beverage on the plane. Check out CNN’s Pack Patience for Air Travel Amateurs for more holiday travel tips.
  • Steer clear of the leisurely, lunchtime crowd and call ahead for delivery.
  • The  gym will be busier than it’s been all year with eager New Year’s “gym resoluters.” Wait them out and take up an outdoor sport for the month of January.

Although there is much to watch out for, there are still many perks to embarking on business travel during the holiday season. You will be sure to find plenty of events and holiday cheer when you’re ready to take a break, and if you can, schedule your flight a day or two early so you can take a few vacation days at the start of our trip.

Bon voyage business travelers! How will you make the most out of your holiday season business trips?

Santa Brings Christmas Joy to Kids Everywhere with iMeet Video Conferencing

Santa embraced the new digital millennium, bringing joy and cheer to children all over the world through email, NORAD’s fantastic Santa tracking website and now even video conferencing. Yesterday, Santa used PGi’s innovative iMeet web-based video collaboration solution to meet live, face-to-face with the lovely children at Sky Ridge Medical Center and my own little ones, Tomas, Isabella, Mateo and Juliet.

For the innocent, amazingly brave kids at Sky Ridge, Santa brought them joy from the North Pole and, for me, finally rang in the excitement of the season. Christmas is a time of magic in homes across the world, and I am incredibly proud that Santa chose iMeet with those innocent children as they fight for their health every day.

As the magic of the season is best captured through the innocent eyes of children everywhere, my sweet little honeys volunteered to share their stories with you all.

Tomas, 10

It was awesome because we were actually talking to Santa. He was at the North Pole and was talking to us in person. And his elf was Buddy from The Elf! It was fantastic because he asked us if we’d been good or not and what we wanted for Christmas. I told him I want a Hexbug hive with some extra Hexbugs and some more iTouch games. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!

Ditch email? Boost lead conversion rates with social media.

Sales strategies succeed when they integrate social media. Are you choosing the right tools and strategies?

While email open rates are declining fast, certain social media platforms offer much better odds. For example, LinkedIn InMails boast a 30% open rate. (Source: MarketingProfs, LinkedIn Sales Ops manager)

Here’s how one of my reps closed a deal with social media in less than a day.

Digital Nomad Tip #22: Top 10 Ways To Stay Productive When The Internet Is Down

Ah, internet connectivity…my greatest frienemy.  Over the past 6 months as a Digital Nomad, internet access has been my closest travel companion and at times, my worst enemy. And here in the state of Kerala, India, power outages and weak connectivity are now an expected part of my work day.

Before & After - Finding Out the Internet Is Out

Fear not fellow internet-addicts, for not all hope is lost! I’ve found that time away from “my precious” can be  more valuable than uninterupted connectivity.

From my experience working throughout Europe and India’s most remote parts, here are 10 things any web worker can do keep productivity high when the internet is out.

10 Ways to Stay Productive When the Internet is Down:

  1. Make a List: Take the time to get organized and write down what you need to accomplish that day. When you’re online again, you’ll be able to work at full-speed.
  2. Queue up Emails: Writing the email takes much longer that the act of sending it, so queue up your emails in Outlook or in Word so they are ready to hit send or copy/paste in as soon as you’re connected.
  3. Work on a Presentation: Use the “quiet time” to work on business requirements or put together your next presentation.
  4. Meet in Person or Over the Phone: Keep the project moving forward by talking in-person, either over the phone or at their desk.
  5. Work Through a Problem: Without the temptation to check your email, you’ll have full mental bandwidth to put your best thinking forward. Get out the whiteboard or take a walk and dig into the root of the problem.
  6. Plan for the Future: Time away from the internet can will give you a chance to step back and think about how your business should be run. Forget about today’s minutia, and think about the year ahead.
  7. Catch Up on Industry News: Use Evernote to bookmark articles for later. Mark them as a “favorite” and read them when you’re offline.
  8. Organize Your Office Space & PC Desktop: If you ever thought you had more important things to do, now you don’t. Take five minutes to organize your work environment or clean up the files on your desktop.
  9. Take a Junior Associate to Lunch: Invest in the future of a junior colleague. Advise them on their career path or simply listen. Work outside the office? Give them a call.
  10. Write a Handwritten Thank You Note: Call upon the lost art of handwriting and write a thank you note to a vendor or a colleague, thanking them for their hard work. The gesture will not be quickly forgotten.

How do you keep business moving forward when offline?
