For the traveling worker, nothing can bring your productivity to a standstill faster than the airport. Although some claim to do their best thinking while waiting for their flight to take off, most agree the airport isn’t the most conducive environment for business. Over the past three months, I’ve spent my fair share of time in the airport. If I’m not scavenging for plugs, I’m refreshing my WiFi finder or trying to find a quiet corner to take a call.
Even though I believe the airport draws more “on the clock” individuals than any other location, aside from the office, it hasn’t evolved to meet the needs of the business traveler.
Yes, there are the dreamy SnoozeCubes of Dubai, Minute Suites of Atlanta and the SleepBoxes of Moscow with unlimited WiFi and plugs galore, but their location and pricing models aren’t always teleworker-friendly.
What about the rest of us? The Gen Y knowledge workers who think WiFi grows on trees?
Although not the magic bullet of teleworker travel, here are a few helpful resources I use when planning my travel:
- List of Global Airports with Free WiFi
- List of US Airports with WiFi Access
- List of Airlines with In-Flight WiFi Access
For those looking for even more airport WiFi options, consider a Boingo subscription. You’ll find the monthly fee well worth it when it works. Find them on Twitter at @Boingo when it doesn’t.
Another option that’s sure to be on every Digital Nomads’ Christmas list is Priority Pass, an independent airport lounge membership providing access to 600+ airport lounges around the world.
As I plan the second half of my yearlong journey to PGi’s EMEA and APAC offices, I have high hopes for the future of the airport and look forward to seeing new companies pop-up to offer teleworkers a more luxurious travel experience.
