PGi’s New Survey Reveals the Latest Global Telework Stats

Flexible work is on the rise all over the globe. Knowledge workers the world over are increasingly wanting—if not demanding—the ability to telecommute at least part-time. Whether it’s to skip a brutal commute, improve work-life balance or simply work with less distractions, telework isn’t a nice-to-have anymore; it’s increasingly a must-have.

As the world’s largest dedicated provider of collaboration software and services, PGi is uniquely positioned at the heart of the remote work movement. And with nearly 50,000 businesses using our collaboration products around the world, we have unmatched access to the pulse of global telecommuters.

Earlier this year, PGi conducted its second annual Global Telework Survey. We polled nearly 3,000 knowledge workers from all over the world on whether or not they are allowed to telecommute, what technologies they rely upon when working remotely, perceptions of teleworkers within their organizations and even their typical commute times. We also broke the data down across three regions: North America (NA); Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) and Asia Pacific Japan (APJ) in order to highlight regional differences in processes and perceptions.

There were some surprises and some confirmations from the responses we received:

  • 79% of all respondents are able to telecommute at least one day a week.
  • 60% of teleworking respondents would resign their current positions for a similar job with similar pay if they could work from home full time.
  • 55% of non-teleworking respondents wished they had the ability to telecommute.
  • 50% of teleworking respondents would telecommute more often if they could, with 2-3 days being the most popular frequency worldwide.
  • The most common response given by non-teleworkers when asked why they don’t telecommute was “Not an option in my role,” at 54%.

It’s clear from the results of our survey that technology advances and the rapid consumer adoption of mobile devices are transforming the way businesses and modern workers function. The notion of working in an office from 9 to 5 is quickly being replaced by the new digital workplace, where everything employees need to successfully do their jobs can be done online from anywhere.

With the right programs and technologies in place, companies can meet the wants and needs of both traditional and remote workers, boosting their productivity, inspiring loyalty and driving business growth.
