Since the dawn of long-distance communication technologies, people have slowly become reliant on the ease and solitude of sending a one-way message (think telegram, email, text or fax). It’s become so easy in fact, that live, two-way communication has become something often avoided and sometimes even feared. Using a gadget to send a digital message is quick, easy and discreet. And if you get a response, you can reply at your leisure. Certain situations make them necessary (if you’re in an elevator, for example, or a doctor’s office where you can’t tactfully have a phone conversation out loud). But more often than not they’re put in to use when we just feel like being in control and would rather avoid face-to-face interaction.

Holly Anderson, Senior Manager of Content for PGi, painting TOMS at Style Your Sole in Austin.
One of my favorite things about being a part of PGi is the chance to work with so many talented people who have life-long passions outside the office. For me, that passion is painting. So when TOMS shoes asked me to participate as a guest artist for their Style Your Sole event this month in Austin, I jumped at the chance! Having been an avid TOMS fan and wearer of their adorable canvas shoes for many years, I’ve been inspired and moved by their One for One™ campaign to give a pair of new shoes to a child in need for every pair sold. I wasn’t familiar with Style Your Sole … yet…. but soon discovered first hand just how wildly popular TOMS are and how far people are willing to go to have them customized for free by local artists!
I was the first artist to arrive at our local Nordstrom where the event was held on Saturday, August 20th, and was quickly encircled by an excited crowd of grown-ups and kids that had been waiting in line outside the store since 9 AM. Three hours later, they were chomping at the bit to get their new TOMS painted and already 30 people were signed up before the event had even officially begun.

One of Holly's creations.
With five artists on the panel in total, we laid out our materials and quickly got to work as the TOMS reps coordinated who would be working with which customers. Considering the shocking popularity of the event AND that it also happened to be Tax Free Weekend (swoon), let’s just say it was an exercise in ordered chaos, championed by a sea of kind-hearted, smiling people with angelic patience and appreciation for art made on the fly.
I was really charmed by the community experience I had that day, and amazed by the good people of Austin, and beyond, when I learned how one aunt – always searching for something fun to do with her favorite niece – drove all the way from Waco to have their TOMS painted together (I’m honored to say, by me). Before the event, I had worried that I might not be able to pull it off … how was I supposed to come up with enough ideas if I was expected to paint 3-4 pairs an hour for four hours? Impossible!

Ready for back to school.
My fears were quickly put to rest when my first customer, a little girl named Amanda B. made a special request in her pint-sized voice “I’d like blue zebra print please!” followed by an adorable, half-toothless grin. Cue heart melt.
- And that was essentially what the entire day was like for me – a gloriously bumpy madhouse of sweet people and precious kids, many of whom had been fantasizing about what they’d like on their TOMS for weeks. I painted everything from autumn leaves and surf waves to paw prints and starbursts. Needless to say, the pressure was definitely ON not to make a mistake or misinterpret their wishes!

Not to mention I was painting against the clock and under the watchful eyes of the owners and countless bystanders goggling curiously at this crazy experiment in social good-meets-art-meets-retail experience.
In the end, we painted approximately 80 pairs of TOMS for the public that day, and I was moved by how many kids told me that they loved the shoes I decorated for them so much that they were going to wear them on their first day of school.
- I posed for many a happy customer for photos of the completed pieces and received some kudos from the TOMS rep, Kerry Barnes, for being the first artist she’d seen at one of these events to bring a series of cool patches and buttons which I sewed on to many pairs in addition to painting them. All in all it was a blast and an incredible experience that I hope to have the chance to participate in again!

Kevin Hoffman Presents “Your Meetings Suck and It’s Your Fault” at SXSW
Meeting design is an art and good facilitation leads to more engagement and happier people. Helping to pave the way toward better meetings, PGi was proud to participate in the SXSW 2011 Tradeshow where we promoted our latest and greatest video conferencing product, iMeet. Also in attendance at the Interactive Conference was a panelist and User Experience Director, Kevin Hoffman of Happy Cog, who led an entertaining talk on how you can keep your meetings from turning stale, awkward and boring.
“You know you rock,” says Hoffman, “but not everyone in your meetings is rocking to the same tune.” Some easy tips to keep guests from falling asleep during your get-togethers include:
- Every meeting should be a necessary step in accomplishing the final goal
- Include interactive activities
- Insert collaborative exercises (especially great for creative teams)
- Keep your conversation informed
- Post mortems are a good thing
To help achieve these goals, Hoffman presented 4 Rules of Engagement for better meetings:
- Know your role – Are you a leader, recorder, group member or facilitator?
- Know how to facilitate a meeting – Manage the meeting time and keep everyone on topic
- Know where you fit in the process – Are you there to support agreement or offer divergent opinion?
- Use the right tools – Have what you need on hand, from old school supplies to the right technology
Understanding expectations, being prepared and keeping your audience engaged can transform a humdrum status meeting into an innovative, collaborative experience. Ping your guests for feedback to take your meetings expertise to the next level and make the most of virtual meeting technologies that connect geographically dispersed teams, help you stay green and lower your business travel budget.

What happens when you get thousands of techies, musicians and filmmakers in the same place at the same time? It’s called SXSW in Austin, Texas, where thousands converge from all over the world to make creative history. It also means that spur of the moment innovation can spark at a moment’s notice for a worthy cause. When the Japan earthquake and Pacific tsunami hit on the first day of the Interactive Conference on March 11th, the organizers of SXSW stepped into action, creating a relief telethon to help raise funds to support Japan relief efforts, with additional support from Hanson Music, the City of Austin, bands, artists, consultants, teachers, speakers, thought leaders and authors.
Streaming live at http://www.sxsw4japan.org/, SXSW4Japan exceeded their donation goal, raising $104,380 by March 20th. The campaign website simply but powerfully nailed their objective including these key elements:
- A quick and dirty, but onsite and genuine, SXSW cares video
- Clear countdown ticker and real-time dollars raised reporting
- Full integration with Facebook and Twitter
- Visibility of the names and faces of individuals and how much they raised or contributed
- Announcements, content and links to relevant, current news on the relief effort
- Instructions on how to help
- A list of corporate sponsors so you can see who cares
The SXSW4Japan campaign is still in action and accepting donations at http://www.sxsw4japan.org/. Stay tuned for upcoming events! Learn more about the campaign on twitter @sxsw4japan or make a $10 donation by texting 90999.
