Great post Blakely. Interesting topic. I think your 3 keys to thinking ... strike that ... to ACTING intrepreneurially are spot on.

If I were to add a 4th, it would be to "embrace risk". Not necessarily to be risky, but to understand the risks inherent in the venture, to understand the executive team's appetite for risk and most importantly to understand the means for mitigating risk along the way.

Although the media would like us to believe that the Pinterest investors risked $37.5M on an "overnight success" like gamblers at a roulette table, they didn't. Pinterest launched 4 years ago and went through 4 rounds of funding: bootstrapped in '08/'09, closed a $500K angel round in '10, secured a $10M Series A in Spring '11 and then a $27M Series B in Fall '11. Each round was subsequently larger than the last and each was dependent upon the team achieving specific milestones. As a result, they managed risk and created this 4 year "overnight success".

Every intrapreneur will need to figure out how to structure their milestones, stage their investment and mange their "investor's" risk.

Ah... meeting nightmares :) I've got a few, but one sticks out in my mind as extra scary. It was a case of the sticky mute button - Almost too scary to talk about even 5 years later. A colleague pressed mute but didn't press it hard enough, giving everyone on the call an earful. A personal side conversation, a dog barking, a flush of a toilet (the horror!). I could go on... Thank goodness for host control where we can spare our guests from such nightmares.

I work from home too and during my first few months, I just stayed at home and never really worked outside our house. But later on, I did feel the need to get out and work where I can see many people around. Now, I make it a point to work in a coffee shop twice a week. I love it because there are also other online workers who stay there. Even though we don't talk that much in the coffee shop, we are very comfortable with each others' busy presence.

Great article, Todd. I was on a video call yesterday and was taken back by how engaging the meeting host was. As the meeting went on, I realized it was his body language. Lots of leaning in, always making eye contact, etc. These small things might sound trivial, but they make a big difference in how comfortable and attentive your guests are. Your message is right on.

If I can add one other non-verbal to the list it would be my host's ability to connect by simply using his hands. When he addressed other guests, he reached his hand out as if he was passing the conversation off to them and it brought everyone to the edge of their seats and took down that "wall" that can sometimes be present during a virtual meeting. Very effective.

Its exactly the same in low end camera market. $9 keychain 720p cameras have China designed mjpeg DSP + 8051 abomination. Its crude, cumbersome to program, but it works and is extremely cheap and easy to make on old FAB lines (190nm? maybe even bigger).Big companies over engineer, Chinese hack together cheapest and often not the best (from technical standpoint) solutions at 1/10 the price and win the market.
